Expresso on track

Ten expresso shots wouldn’t be sufficient to Frank Warren, owner of the Breukelen Coffee House in Crown Heights, for celebrating victory at the Red Hook Criterium, a unique nighttime cobblestone bike race in Brooklyn. It is not just about fixed gear, going on a Sunday ride for a good dose of exercise, it is way more than that as Frank would explain to you.

Faster than Jumbo?

If you ever go to Copenhagen you won’t find anybody else riding faster than Jumbo who has been a bike messenger for 7 years. He knows the city like the back of his hand, digging out the hidden shortcuts or bending the rules of the streets, nothing intimidates him and that’s why he is so good at it!

God bless bike messengers in Milan

Overall being a coursier takes some guts but being a coursier in Milan is what I call heroic! No offense to my Italian counterparts :-)

State of mind

When riding a bike, for work or fun, one word comes to mind ‘Freedom’.

Warm applause for them

This last few days have been cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey and I just have one thought right now, the couriers who deal with snow, wind, rain, cold and other shenanigans.
Hats off to you guys!

Sweet Mama

These new bags from Wheelmen&Co are pretty pretty nice! They had few select hand made pieces for Mrs. and Mr. produced specifically for the Holidays. And for the Ladies, the new leather patent model is retail priced ($299.99). You’d better be a good kid!

Go to the store here.

Trash your bag

The Fixed Gear era is all about customizing, make your bike at your image and suitable to your specific needs. Trash Bags, a small scale messenger bags business in Minneapolis, followed the same idea for messenger bags and offers a wide variety of customizing options, ranging from the number of pockets, the stitching color and even personal custom art to add on. The bags are made in house by the small crew of Trash Bags who also test the new bag designs on the streets of Minneapolis. The owner, Andy Larson, is a former bike messenger and I bet you his bags are tough! Good luck to them!

What’ll ya have!

This coming weekend Atlanta is having a big time celebrating messenger and fixie culture with 2 major events and plenty of other side events (sprints, fixed gear events, art show, miscallenous title competitions and parties). All that just to make you hurt!

Bike Battle (this time it’s not rap) organized by Loose Nuts bike shop in Grant Park. A wild competition on its way.

and the NACCC (North American Cycle Courier Championships), apparently four days of brutality, beer, hard work and a lot of fun.
